I agree with some of the above. If you impose a required donation then you essentially are charging for the race. However, if you require riders to either donate money (any amount) or volunteer (build trails, etc.) that would keep the race "free" and allow anyone to race regardless of money. Out of towners may have to plan a little more ahead to volunteer but it still gives them the option.

I was looking a the guidebook and noticed the services listed don't show any open/closed times for the stores. I know they must change but does anyone have a cheat-sheet for services and times they are open? I can call some places later this summer to make a list so we don't all have to call ahead to find out this information. Also does anyone have information for some of the detours? The guidebook doesn't list any water stops etc. on the detours and this information would be nice to know.

Got about 2000 finds. Got tired of finding film canisters in light poles. Maybe one in 100 were worth the search. Usually the larger containers were the best to look for. Haven't searched for about 2 years now. I usually try to pick up ones in new states or countries but that's about it.

So the fastest time I could find for SW-NE is 7d10h38m - Dan Hickstein (Rode Dgo --> Den). Any faster times? Do you guys think the Eastbound direction will be faster or slower?

Thanks for the replies. Looks like this direction will definitely give the advantage to those that can make Silverton by 7:45ish. Anyone got room for an extra bikepacker from Denver to Durango for the start? John

Anyone have a GPS track for the reverse direction? I cant seem to 'flip' mine in BaseCamp. Maybe I'll just stick with the Denver start since I haven't ridden the entire route. Is the new start point in Durango now the official finish for the Denver starters? John
Edit: I guess a track is a track and maybe it doesn't need to be flipped to follow it? I guess since I'm just using the track for reference. Looks like about 85 miles from the new start point in Durango to Silverton. Anyone ridden this way and can comment on how long it took them to get to Silverton?

How about a mass start from each end at 6am? It wouldn't be too difficult to coordinate and then racers could pick the direction they want to travel. Could even have a live web stream or something similar for the official start. Stefan could have the riders colored according to direction on the tracker map. John Plus the riders starting in Durango would be breaking the #1 rule Race from Denver to Durango, self-supported, under only your own power, along the entire CTR route.

I dont like the idea of going the opposite direction. I think I will stick with the Southbound direction and run a TT. Sounds interesting but I could just see my wife's face after she drove me to Durango and then had to drive again to pick my sorry butt up somewhere if I didn't finish.

Just reached BV today and that's all the farther I planned this year. Next year I'll race! If you're worried about the water from Denver to BV - don't! All the spots in the guide book with half cup or more were flowing great. Good luck to all you racers!

Not many people showed up last night--although Walter and I had a nice time. Did I pick a bad time or something? Maybe not enough notice. Another Spot question - Do you turn it off when you stop for the night/long breaks or just leave it on?

I'm working on the GPX file and was curious if one of you could help me with a stupid question... I downloaded Toby's GPX file and in Garmin BaseCamp I can't get the waypoint labels to go away, so it's virtually impossible to see the track/terrain right on the trail as they are obscured by the white labels. Any suggestions? I've looked all over the program and cant seem to find the right settings. See attached...
Those points are the waypoint names. The track has no names for the points. If you want to remove all the waypoints make sure you save the file then copy it and make a new file to play with. Now on the list of waypoints you see listed on the left (ie. 10MileP, 2010Camp1, 2010Camp2) Just highlight all the waypoints you dont want and delete them. Select the first one and hold the shift key down and scroll down to the last one and pick it and this should highlight all in-between to delete. You can scroll down to the bottom and see all the track files. They are the ones with the foot print picture to identify them. They should be labeled "Track 001 Start" etc. edit: I would keep the waypoints because they actually have valuable information. The names are millage, features, turns and ridge crossings along the route. Check out http://www.bearcreeksurvey.com/ for more info.
