A message from Gunnar:
e
Translate Hello GST-facturer (drivers, friends, helpers, ...)
as one or the other has already heard of you, I'm going this year, the Tour Divide and therefore can not spend as much time the GST ... the track is on "simmer" and will be ready within the next two weeks, his (Phil hurry up!)!
But there is a point at which it hacks!
Waypoints
I have "a ton" of files (about 50) in which there are also waypoints. This would have to be prepared once.
Who wants to do something to the success / Enhance the GST? Sure all of you!
Who has time to do this within the next two weeks on your own computer?
The goal is to have a single waypoint file in which all are combined and were dubbed uniform. In a format that all relevant information can be seen at all major GPS devices.
Certainly no work for a total GPS newbie, but also not a freak project.
I am very happy about feedback and thank you once before on behalf of all GST-2013 driver for the help!
Kind regards and "Happy Miles" eating on the weekends
Gunnar
PS: I have @ the sake of simplicity some files together, "carved", so get one or other of the possibly multiple mail! Thanks for understanding!
Grenzsteintrophy [Gunnar Fehlau] Note: I call this e-mail acount not daily, so you should not be surprised if a reply can wait a few days to be -------------------. -------------------------------- Grenzsteintrophy | 17/06/2013 The Grenzsteintrophy follows over about 1250 km mountain bike ride as the former German -German border development: No entry fee, no prize money, no service, no timing, no organization -> Max Challenge & Freedom Just you, your bike, your legs and your head to decide whether you achieve the goal! And the way is also the goal of the tour has finally also a historical Seite.

Thank You. I am in. Now the training and information work begin. I am planning to get a Garmin basemap for Europe and load it with Garmin software. Any other Americans want to venture this with me?

Over here in the US we are using a garmin basemap and topofusion software. What basemap and software should we use for the GST?
Also, I plan to continue from the finish of the GST and bikepack towards Italy. Any route suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeff

Phil and friends,
I am doing a preliminary study to see about doing this in 2013. I am looking for the route (even the 2012 route) shown on something like google earth or map my ride. Any ideas?

Well...It's time for our co-leaders to find out who's the strongest/toughest climber. And I imagine the upcoming sections favor the racer with the best descents as well. What amazing rides the racers are throwing down this year!
Yes, I do not expect that the two front runners will climb Indiana Pass at the same speed......if they stay together then someone is going a bit slower than max pace. We shall see!

Tour Divide Blues by the Grateful TD racers.
All the days combine, they melt into a dream,
A rubbing brake squeals in your ears.
In the end there's just pain cryin' up the night
Thru all the pedal turns and vanished trail,
Tour Divide Blues.
When all the chips are down, there's nothing left to see,
There's just more mud and crazy dreams.
In the end there's your heart cryin' like the wind.
Down every lonely trail that's ever been,
Tour Divide Blues.
I've slept under picnic tables and Montana "Hilton" hotels, can't sleep for trying.
Clean off the dirty chain one more time,
Gonna make it shine, shine
It all rolls into one and nothing comes for free,
There's nothing you can hold, for very long.
And then you feel that pain come crying like the wind,
It seems like all this race is just a crazy dream.
Tour Divide Blues.

Looks like the 3 guys (GP, ES, AJ) are real close to pulling in Kurt S as long as they don't party too long at Flagg Ranch while Kurt makes time along Jackson Lake. Serge C solidly in 3rd. Serge has been riding alone since Wise River ...
Looks like Craig and Ollie, the leaders stayed indoors in those cabins or motel there on the 287 Hwy last night. Late lunch in Pinedale! Depending on how long they take to eat and re-supply, they're looking at being up on the record pace by 6 hours or so by the time they "clock in" through Boulder.
The record pace of JP?

Well, it appears that the long awaited gap has opened, with Ollie about 30 miles ahead of Craig. Will both make Pinedale this evening? Pinedale has 24 hour stores so a late arrival is not a hinderance.

Any news on David Goldberg? His pace is a bit slower than I expected and he appears to be in Butte in the middle of the day. Bike issues perhaps? He is my hero in the plus fifty group.

On the Rohloff discussion......there were many times on TD that I had to pedal gingerly or even dismount on mud to avoid a drivetrain melt down. It sure would be nice to apply full power with no fear of calamity. OTOH, it seems hard to fine anyone who can correctly set up a Rohloff with a belt and get it right. It would be a technical mystery for me.

Erik L. has had his share of bad fortune in this race. It shows that avoiding the pitfalls is as important as speed in this adventure. Last year I was 16 miles from the finish in AW at 3am feeling great that I was going to finish TD 2011 with zero physical or mechanical difficulties when WHAM!!!, I was hit hard by a suicidal Jackrabbit. Rear tire flatted and sidewall tear, aerobars broken off and my left side pretty bloody. So, it ain't over 'till its over. Jeff

There are more and more rigid forks on TD each year. What kind are most folks using? Carbon fibre? Abpout how much weight do they save over a Fox fork? I use a Fox terralogic that has an excellent functioning auto lockout system, so weight saving would be my only motivation to switch. Also, some events are much rougher than TD.

I agree with Denis. I have made a life long habit of finishing what I start. So, TD was no different. It needs to be preordained in your brain. Just like life, there is no quitting option, so keep moving forward.
And, you need to eliminate reasons to quit, especially the 'not enough time' reason. Most issues can be solved in a day. For example, A. Harding went back to Steamboat, repaired his broken frame and kept on going.
Finally, it is the unexpected craziness that makes unsupported long races so much fun. Knowing you can bail sucks the fun out.
Jeff
