The race starts tomorrow 4/23.  Live tracking link:

http://trackleaders.com/aztr

Race site:

http://topofusion.com/azt/race.php

Please use this thread for discussion, updates, speculation, heckling, etc.  It will keep it in one places since there are two pre-race AZT threads.

Weather is unseasonably cold in Tucson today, and should remain so tomorrow as well.  Snow is possible in places, but things should be clearing and quickly warming up over the weekend.

Good luck to everyone.

An excerpt from the latest forecast:

Regarding snow...in general our snow grids show 3-6 inches above
6000 feet...1-3 inches from 5-6000 feet (including Bisbee/sonoita)
and little if any accumulation below 5000 feet/valley floors. This
is a cold storm with lots of cold air for this final shortwave to
work with...and forecast soundings lean US to a fairly high
confidence of seeing wet snow above approximately 4500 feet tonight.

This is a shockingly cold storm for April (today will be the coldest April 22 ever recorded for Tucson), similar to the one that hit last year during the 300.
The timing is more favorable this year (Thursday night into Friday, rather than Friday into Saturday).  But this storm has the potential to drop enough moisture to affect trail conditions.  It also appears to be a southerly storm, focusing in on the area we'll be riding tomorrow.

I'm packing more clothes right now...

light snow here in Flagstaff and ~2-3" of new powder on the ground at 9000 feet....  may be more on the way next week...
Randy and I are headed up to camp at 11,400' tonight - hoping to find new powder in the Abineau canyon chutes tomorrow... hard to believe there is a bike race coming through here in a week or two...
I'll be cheering on those spot dots and may hand out some trail magic and take photos as the AZT 750 racers come through Flagstaff...

So much for all of those days I intentionally rode in the heat of the day trying to get ready for hot days. Well then again at my pace I will likely end up in the heat out at the end anyway.

Looks like they are off and riding!

It's going to be well all day today. They should be arriving at Patagonia around noonish and Vail around 6am tomorrow (the leaders). Here is the current weather forecast:

Precipitation should gradually end from west to east across Santa Cruz and southeast Pima counties through early afternoon. The heaviest precipitation will fall east of a line from Vail to Patagonia where another tenth to a quarter inch of precipitation is possible before noon. Snow levels will hover around 5000 feet through mid morning rise slightly before lunch time. Snow accumulations between 5000 and 6000 feet should generally be limited to non paved surfaces. In the Tucson Metro area...light rain should exit the southern and eastern sections of the city by 10 am.

wow what a big group of starters----and there off.......I see Scott's Spot out front but it looks like about 8 racers do not have their Spots mounted so as to give out good updates as they still show being at the start 1+ hour into it

humm, lot's of new snow here in Colo, over a foot at my place, wonder how much the AZT will be getting?

Just out of curiosity does anyone know what type of bike/set-up Deanna Adams is using for the AZT?

Scott should be heading thru this gate shortly and down into Patagonia.

Seems that more than a few people didn't get their Spots into tracking mode. Wonder were they are in the mix and if Scott is a far out as he looks. Seems he may not have even slowed down thru Patagonia. It'll be interesting to see how late folks go.

Not sure what size it was, but I'll post up a pic in a bit. It looked bigger than any table saw blade I've ever seen. And, yeah, weather was gross! Snowing and hovering right at freezing at the start. Wet and soupy!

10:40 pm mst

back to front:

Looks like Deanna just made Patagonia so at least she will is off the ST for her next leg

Looks like many mid pack racers are now settling in for the first night

3 racers just got to the off route observatory rest area, there is water there, will they push on or camp up?

Randy Sooter Spot is off route in Agua Caliente Canyon – it could be easy to miss this down hill hard right in the dark, but he might just be laying up for the night, if so then he will not get over the ridge and into Chino Canyon tonight—& getting over that ridge is a main ‘cut’ on day 1 for the fast ones

Jefe did make that cut, he is still moving and about to top out on a long gravel road climb & rejoin some ST, if it’s muddy it can be sticky/slick in the next section

Scott’s Spot is out front of Jefe’s by a bit, (I wonder if he is alone or if others with mismounted Spots are with him) the new ST will be slowing him down a bit from last yr’s route but he is setting a strong pace

luck to all.......

humm--I looked closer at Randy's individual Spot(s) and he actually missed a turn some time ago--have to watch tomorrow and see if he is able to back track and get back on route, it will be a slog to get back to where he missed the turn & then follow the actual route right back to almost the same area he looks to be camping up tonight ahhhhh........
