Route notes

To clarify a bit on the two route notes mentioned in Chad's last post:

* In terms of cue mileage, the rerouted AZT is just after mile 5.8, climbing out of Walnut Canyon.  You'll get off the GPX track as it goes to new trail that should be more rideable than the old section, which was the first hike-a-bike on the route.  It should rejoin the track a little later.

* The road outside Williams is just after the 4th stage starts, at mile 0.2 by the ADOT yard.

Tracker is online:  http://trackleaders.com/coconino

I am still waiting for a share page or two, or confirmation that others are carrying a SPOT.  By the way the old tracker is still online at http://trackleaders.com/coconino09  (in case you want to study splits).  It looks like Chad and I will be there for the start and will ride out for the first stage, but can't make the whole thing.  I'm really bummed about this, but I need to be back to tend to my S/O who just recently had hip surgery.

Weather looks ideal -- warming up just a bit, and very dry.

Remember, Plague is curable if diagnosed early.

You'll be fine, just don't let the mice nibble your ears at night!

Looks like I'm in for the stage race after all.  Aaron Gulley is another late entrant.  I should make it to 'the Place' at 7am, but if not, I'll see everyone at stage stop 1.

I won't be at the place!  Driving up tomorrow early and starting shortly after.  Better hope I have some legs or I may need lights to get to stage stop 1!

Looks like Matt has pushed on to the second stop tonight. Looks like he will be attacking Mingus Mtn. at night.. Mingus is Native American for BIG FRIGGIN HILL!

Rock on!

The AZT above Lake Mary was destroyed
by cows. Sure it slowed folks a bit. We saw
Mattew at buddah beach an hour or so ago
and he was in good spirits. Go matt!

Matt is on pace to possibly beat my record. I slept about a total of ~4 hours the first night. I was having some problems cooling down that first night, I ended up taking a quick bath in the lagoons. Even rested for about 1.5 hours there before making the climb up Mingus. Climbing Trail 105 at night slowed me down a bit too. Those were really the only two spots on the entire loop that I stopped to rest.

We will see if he stops to take a quick bath/nap at Dead Horse State Park or continue on. Any bets?

Oh wait, just realized that I started at 11am. Matt started at 7am this morning according to the tracker.

I was thinking that we had the same start time. Here is my track: http://trackleaders.com/coconino09i.php?name=Chad_Brown___ITT

I think he is about 2 hours behind me. Assuming he does not sleep on the route, he could easily still the title.

It's okay, I am missing my beer right now. My pink recovery socks are making me dumber. Where are you camped out?

Nice. If I lived a little closer to Sedona, I would swing by. Have a good ride out there Smiley

This is gonna be cool to watch and see if ML will start knocking on the door of your record Chad.  He's certainly down the street but not quite to your house...  It is Matt Lee though... but still it will be MUCH work to tackle your record Chad.  Hard to say exactly when he started but if he can maintain his pace he will beat the record... but he is 2+ hours behind Chad's time at about 6 miles before Cottonwood...
ML certainly has cooler weather than Chad did, and the 7am start could mean less night riding for ML.
Looking at this pic:
http://drunkcyclist.com/2010/10/09/matthew-lee-is-a-drunk-cyclist/
is very interesting.  No backpack and no seatpack.  He is traveling light...

I think my the time I took to cool down in Dead Horse and catch my breath on the side of Trail 105 will be my undoing. Matt is a strong guy, much more mentally than I am. I quiver at the thought of riding solo at times. It's much more fun to chat, take pictures, even share chamois creme (can I get a what-what Troy?)

Also, I am surprised to see Matt traveling that light. No backpack? I know I was sure cold on Mingus and  Elden (with a 2am finish). 33 degrees is the low in Flagstaff and Williams tonight.

It's good to see someone racing this beast ITT style. Keep on chugging Matt....It would be an honor to see the record go to someone from the east coast and a PBR drinker at that!

Got some calls posted from Matthew Lee. First was around 6:20pm then just after midnight. He'd made it from Sedona to Cottonwood.

that's funny Chad! yeah i can share chamois creme but no double dipping!
Still looks like he is 2+ hours behind virtual Chad.  In the call-in he says that he started at 8:08am from Flagstaff yesterday...
