Hi Guys, total beginner here from Holland. I'm planning to cycle the alps from austria tot south france and i got totally excited about the bikepacking way of travelling. I'm gonna go with a cx/racebike, and i'm thinking about the options for a handlebag roll. I'm going for the ortlieb bikepacking seat and framebag and one or two fuel bags on the toptube. But the handlebar roll will never fit nicely between the drops. So i also see these handlebar harnesses, but why not just go for a couple of straps and a drybag. I plan on putting my tent, sleepingbag and mat on the front. I can put all of this in a good drybag and then just strap it to my handlebar. Offcourse there can be some issues with cables, but essentially i want to ask you guys who maybe also uses this technique. And maybe someone can tell me why that's actually a very bad idea Wink. It also saves alot of money and maybe useless features that take away space.

Hope to gain some insights, thanks!

People have been doing this for years. It's a great, simple solution for all the reasons you've listed above. Just strap it tight and check it on occasion to ensure the bag doesn't fall into your front wheel when you're bombing down a hill at 50km/h.
Have fun on your trip.
