I got some materials for sewing a frame bag -- some 1000 cordura and silver silnylon -- and I am impressed with the light weight and apparent toughness of the silnylon material.

I can see using this for tarp/shelter options.  I am wondering what people are using for fastening/tying up silnylon tarps.  Specifically, I am wondering about plastic fasteners that go on/off at the time of use and would allow me to use as large or small a portion of tarp as needed at the time.

Can you folks with this type of experience post your thoughts, ideas, photos?  Thanks so much!

I have a small siltarp from Integral Designs, with some awesome grommets on it; I have tied loops of bungee cord through each grommet. Its a small tarp, so I usually use it all; I've even used it as a rain blanket.

Found these at a local hardware store for $2 apiece.  They seem to lock onto the silnylon well, but aren't very compact.  Made out of a hard plastic.

just sew on silnylon or nylon scrap reinforcement patches and put webbing loops onto that to tie the tarp up.  sure, you can't move them, but I prefer to have one "standard" tarp setup method that works most places.

I use cord locks, basically the same idea as a ladderlock on the strap of a backpack, except my guy-line remains attached.  I stake out my tarp then just pull the cord to tighten.

i have something similar but have not used it with any light weight material.  holds good in any wind, but is a bit heavy.

If you're making a tarp, build it with reinforced attachment points around the perimeter like a commercial model.  They'll be stronger than any temporary attachment system and will not slip or damage the fabric.  It you still want a temporary system check out the Holdon clips that Rockywoods sells.

They will work on a hemmed tarp but could damage one made from lightweight fabric.  You can prevent problems by placing a small piece of heavier fabric between the Holdon and the tarp.
