Looking to make some light, waterproof/windproof outer gloves/gauntlets. Anyone done this before and have links to patterns or helpful hints on what materials to use? I was thinking about tyvek or some sort of dwr fabric. Not sure how well that will work tho.

Tons of mitten patterns on the internet. Bjorn made some out of beaver a few posts down. http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,6864.0.html

If I were going with synthetics(which I would, personally), I would use Toughtek standard on the palms over a base mitt of eVent.

I made these 'Lance Marshall' mitts in size large with some 2.5 layer wpb fabric a few years ago. Great instructions, easy to make, comfortable and they work well. I used them for years and they're still going. I have experimented with tyvek and wouldn't bother. I made a lobster pattern mitt of my own design with the thin white tyvek used for painter's suits and they soaked through and wore very quickly. They failed miserably for anything above a light temporary drizzle.

I recently modified the LM mitt pattern and made a pair of cuben hybrid lobsters that I have yet to test because I haven't been out in the piss with them yet. The idea with the cuben is a non breathable lobster that I would use with defeet wool duragloves to keep my hands warm as I struggle with icy hands riding in the rain when it's between freezing and 5 degrees celsius. I'm hoping these will be the right tool to help.

The Lance Marshall Pattern.....

Good Luck!

Thanks guys. Looking to build something with about a 3 - 4 week use lifetime for a Tour Divide attempt. Hoping to keep the wind/rain off of a pair of liner gloves. I will take a peek at the links you all listed.

For Spring/Fall use I am going to make lobster claw waterproof/coated cordura glove covers, base glove being DeFeet wooly gloves. I feel like waterproof-waterproof is important at certain times-- mostly that near-freezing rain that can happen in Spring and fall. Winter is its own thing. But I'll be experimenting.
