If you're looking for a solid, well proven GPS for bikepacking, the LegendHCx is one I often recommend, and here's a good deal on it plus Topo 2008 software (which lets you upload topo base maps in the US).  Thanks to GPSdeals for the scoop, see here:

Yep, that's what you'd need to load basemaps for something like CTR.  This bundle would work pretty well for you.

So just to get this right as i'm a GPS noob... I would load the base maps off the disc to the unit plus the gpx file from the CTR site or whereever and i'm away Huh?

Would the unit hold the full CTR in oe go with out swaping data cards Huh?

Sorry if this is basic stuff for you but i have to ask ??

Yeah, you'd only need a very small memory card (even 32mb would be enough) to cover the CTR.  Add the track in from the CTR site and you'll be good to go.

I got this unit/package, working great for me, arrived in 4 days.

Going to start using it to map a small trail system I'm building in a city park, one feature I'm very happy with so far is the ability to record "tracks" in different colors, making it easier for the dense trail system I'm using it for.
