I'm a Transportation Planner with my state DOT. I ride 10 miles to and from the train daily. I started this job in January and have been amazed at how much impact daily riding has had on my weekly mountain biking. Establishing that base has really enhanced my performance, especially so early in the season. Endurance, strength, pace are all up. Makes getting up at 5am worth it. I think.,,

Two bikepack excursions coming up. An overnighter and a 3 day. Nothing too challenging but looking forward to it!

I'm an endodontist.  Reluctant tooth jockey.
I Did the full time thing with Indian Health Service for 10 years, paid off my school loans and quit to contract out work.  Lost my full time benefits (insurance and PTO 8 weeks off a year) and a big paycheck...
BUT... now I work two days a month  headbang and another two weeks every three to four months...which leaves plenty of time for riding
We (my wife and I) made the decision last year to quit our full time jobs to sell the big house and move back into our townhouse...simplify and get rid of shit...and travel.
We can now be on the road much more often and I just need to show up here and there...works for now...

Hey all!

New here but have been checking out the different threads between here, Mtbr and other forums. I thought this was an interesting thread to make my first post. I was surprised to see so many people here with fantastic career's who still aren't fully content with them. That could partly be because travel is integral, it's what makes us whole and be able to give back more to ourselves and people. I'm definitely underemployed but enjoy what I do. I used to teach video production to middle school and high school student's for five years before I quite my job and went on a 2 1/2 month bike touring trip. When I got back home I started this website www.manualpedal.com to facilitate what I truly love the most and that's everything that has to do with bikes. Especially bicycle travel. It's something that I don't have to try to love, I just innately love it so much it's all of what I think about.

Apart from running the website and my YouTube channel I work 8hrs 4 days a week at my local bike shop and 1 of those days I work from home. I'm the in store and only "new media" guy and produce photographs of bicycle shoes, parts, and other related media for their site. My background is in design communication by trade so yeah it's fun. In the winter it get's slow so I try to plan trips around that time with my latest projected trip to bike in Colombia for 2 weeks. Other than that I try to do weekend trip since I have Friday, Sat and Sunday's off.

It seems I am the only tradesperson...

Industrial Electrician by trade, usually working on Oil & Gas facilities in Canada doing a variety of work. Sometimes a maintenance guy, often doing new construction and increasingly an office guy in the winter Smiley  Specialized in heat tracing installation.

I don't care for the actual electrical work itself but enjoy the resources industry overall. Incredibly complex industry, extremely talented people to work with and your always outside regardless of the weather (-52C for daytime highs?).  The money is awesome, usually good shifts (10/4, 7/7, 14/7, 24/7, 1M/1M) and the work is there whenever you want it. The hours are terrible though and sometimes during an emergency you don't get to go home for months at a time. But your rewarded very well for your time in OT.

Probably should get a job, been a few years. Too much time bikepacking across the world again Smiley
