Since you traveled by bike and had a backpacks, that was bikepacking. Tour Divide racers spend nights in motels too. Pictures are simply great. You're lucky to have a wife who share bike passion with you.
Thanks for sharing and hope it will be continued  thumbsup

Looks like a great trip. Based on the number of hostels/stops on your map, it looks like you took a little more than a week for the ride. Did you have a chance to ride in areas outside of what's detailed on the Google map?

We'd planned on spending a day at the Wolftrax trails outside Laggan on our day off in Newtonmoore, but decided to take a day off the saddle and do some hiking instead. We took 9 days in an effort to give us lots of time to stop and check things out and keep it casual. Could be done in 5 days, but wouldn't have been as much fun for us.

Sounds like a perfect plan. Based on the photos you've posted, there was plenty to see.

Well done.

Is there a "best" time of year to make that trip?

We went in late June- which worked out well as there were less 'crowds' than there might be during the July and August holidays (hard to imagine it ever getting crowded, it was so vast and empty). Also, later in the summer I hear the midges might get worse. They weren't much of a problem on our trip as long as we didn't stop in or near the woods. They weren't fast enough to keep up with a biker and we could stop for 5 minutes or so before they'd find us. The west coast was worse for midges, but best for scenery. All that said, next time I'd like to go in August when the heather is in bloom. It was just starting to bud at the end of our trip.
