Good thread idea  thumbsup Sweet set ups!

I was about to have Porcelain Rocket make a frame bag for this bike, when it dawned I could possibly use one of the tandem bags they made for us previously. So that's what you're looking at; a custom/non-custom FS frame bag  icon_biggrin I was grappling with how to create room for the suspension movement. Once I mounted the top tube bag the answer presented itself. A bottle cage will mount under the downtube, and the Blacklite dropper will be replaced by regular post/QR collar. Another "not pretty" setup, but WTF, it's gonna work.

My goal is to minimize the load in my backpack – right now it looks like I'd have 20-24 liters in it for a four day stretch of no food services and around two days worth of water. (Prolly overkill on the water.) This kit includes a 4S bivy bag, 4x7' tarp and clothing for nights down to freezing.

vvv Nice, tanslacks. I like having a rear rack option almost as much as I like full suspension  Wink

Here is my rig 1 week into a two week tour. I used the rear rack for the first week while crossing the desert. I needed panniers for the extra water to travel the long distances between refills. This picture was taken in Idyllwild on my way to san diego. Not so pretty, but it got the job done!

Hey Errin,
Have you ridden on the beach with the weight of a kid on there? been thinking of it with a rear mounted seat on my fatbike.

Hey Eric, Errin is Area45.

We've done a lot of riding over the years with a front mounted seat, the pet monkey has been on one since 12 months (now 6 and half) first on a big travel dually for singletrack, another on our road tandem, now on a fat, so we have a lot of experience together. She loves it. Some big days/weeks too.

Front is WAY better, bike is better balanced, the little one gets the same viewing and riding experience as you do, still have room for seatbags and framebag access is fine, and because they are right in front you can interact/feed/educate/protect them as you ride.

This current front seat is a LOCT, hard to get as they only do limited production runs. We started with a Weeride until she outgrew it at around 4.5 years.

Pic from a fat shakedown run:

We just came back from a week on a local island, loaded up with snorkelling gear, full wetsuits (winter here) and the pet monkey was on a new rig I built for the trip (I've got it on my blog, but must post it up on the DIY board). 7psi was fine, carved through chopped sand from tyre tracks and floated over virgin sand.

Raining buckets back to the boat:

Daytrip from camp:

It's basically a tagalong bike, with a chainstay section grafted onto the seatstays, to run a Velocity Snowcat and Hookworm. Topeak rack and Ortliebs. I booty fabbed it up for the trip, but seriously thinking about getting GripSport here in Aus to mod the rear triangle to accept a Clown and BFL, 155mm alloy ISIS cranks to suit 100mm BB and Nexus 8 for gears. Little half fat.

Hey Gang -- I rode the Pugs for six months in South America with this setup. All the gear was on the bike (i.e., no backpack).

That Pug has to be one of my favorite setups ever.  I don't even know what it is that I like so much.  The heavily sun faded bags, the monster tires, the idea of grinding this thing through gravel roads in SA.  Regardless --awesome. Makes me want a fatbike even more.

Here are my setups:  One for road touring, the other for bikepacking.

Me and two friends used these setups while cycling around Wales for 5 days.

It was their first bikepacking trip, so they've just used drybags strapped to the bike with some webbing. Although not an optimal solution it proved to have a very good performance/price ratio - perfect for starting with lightweight off-road touring. One of them is already asking when we're doing that again - hooked! Wink

My newest Surly, working on getting it all set up for some smaller mountain excursions. Rode almost 50 miles this weekend to shake down the build, love riding it.

My current rig looks just about like everyone's, so I thought I'd post up my rig from 1990. The frame is something I built out of 4130, lugged. It includes 3 bottle cages, a braze-on Phil Wood oil carrier, and an offside spoke carrier on the left chainstay (something the Surly /Salsa picked up 20 years later). The fork is a Bontrager with curved legs and campy fork-ends. The groupo is Campy Euclid, and the wheels are Mavic Oxygen M6 rims to Phil Wood hubs running a Dura-Ace 7sp freewheel.

Beautiful bike spokenword. The inspiration for my surly LHT touring build (3rd post in this thread) came from images of bikes such as yours. What a beauty, that's a proper bike right there.

Ride what you got! This is my most recent rig (since upgraded to an '03 Klein Attitude). '94 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo with a rigid fork. This was for an overnighter in the Zuni mountains, western New Mexico. I purchased no extra gear for this trip except the water bottles (which were cheaper than bike bottles and worked just as well). Sadly, I sold this bike last week. Now gearing up to outfit the Klein!

Here's a pic of my setup for a month long tour in Chile and Argentina last November/December. 54cm Long Haul Trucker, International touring mode. I built all the bags minus the seatbag myself.

Hey Addy. I'm thinking about converting my LHT over to more of this kind of setup as well. How do you like the straight bars on it? And what tires you rolling?

Hi fourtoone,

I love it. I have two LHT's, a 56cm set up more like a gravel grinder; 2x front, 40mm schwalbe duremes, salsa bell lap bars, interrupters. This bike fits well built as such. It's my 'road' bike.

I got the 54cm specifically because I wanted to set it up flat bar and I wanted it to feel 'smaller', more like a mountain bike. It would feel too small with drop bars, set up like the 56cm I have above. I've got long arms for my proportions, this is why I have two. I love it. It's a utilitarian work horse. Gets me to work, gets me onto dirt roads, trail if I want. It's a get the job done bike, never have to think about it.

I've got 2" schwalbe marathon extremes on it. I don't think they make them anymore, the mondial is the replacement, which I don't know too much about but I'm sure they'd do the job. The beauty of the LHT is it's adaptability. Check out Joe Cruz's blog (it's exceptional) he's got the Pugsley a few posts up. He's written a very articulate composition, with pictures, on why the LHT is a great touring option and he has used his in a variety of ways. They're the one bike to do it all. Just set it up and try, you'll like it.

Sweet. I was hoping 2"ers would fit on it, my LBS told me they wouldn't. I found this page on Joe's blog:

Great writeup. Thanks to you both.
