Recently put these on a set of HED Belgium + rims and set them up tubeless. We aired the rear up to 40psi and had it blow off the rim. Thought it just wasn't seated so we tried again and it held. I made it 2 miles down the road and it blew off while riding.

Came up to the bike shop and checked the two they had there and found the same issue. Headed home to check the 4th one and are expecting to see the same thing. Wondering if anyone else has run into issues?

I tried to get a picture of all 3 tires and the specific problem areas. If you look closely, you can see how to bead is cut away and is virtually nonexistent. The shop is going to be sending them back, so that side is covered at least.

That's NOT something I want to worry about while loaded and hitting rocks, etc. A small bump in the right place and the bead will pop off and you're SOL since a tube won't even save you.

EDIT: make that 4 tires with the same issue, in the exact same spot on each tire.  I'll also note that the tires we purchased and the tires that were at the shop were purchased at different times on different orders, more than a month apart.  If they were the same order, I'd be inclined to think it was a bad batch.  However, with that much time differential on a brand new, highly anticipated tire, I'm guessing it's an issue with the manufacturing process, not just a bad batch...

Haven't tried the Sparwoods yet.  Been running the Cannonballs with no issues, quite like 'em!  But that disappearing bead act is not so great... not that it makes it better, but are those HED rims hookless?

No, they have a bit of a hook on them.

Curious if you've had other tires on those rims.  Any issues in the past?  I've been wanting to try those out, but now am skeptical.

Running the stock Schwable Thunder Burt's that came on the Cutthroat now. The wheels aren't the common denominator being that two of the tires were still brand new, in their packaging, still unsold at the shop. I've also been running these wheels with various other tires on my Vaya for around 2,000 miles, both gravel and pavement touring.

I've been seriously looking at Sparwoods. My LBS has them backordered through their main supplier so I've been looking at other options. that looks l;ike a pretty significant manufacturing defect.
This makes be think twice about them.
Thanks for the update.

I just picked up a new pair of WTB Nano Comp tires today. My old ones have been almost flawless except for getting a sidewall tear while.

Older post I realize but I have something useful to say

I ran 3 of the very first Sparwood tires (Oct 1 2015?)  when they were finally released to the public. I got about 4200 km on the first set before they were wore out and got another 3000 km on the second tire (used as a rear). Never had a single issue with the tires. Actually loved them for off road touring in Southern Africa, rolled amazingly fast on nearly every surface and very good in sand for a 2.2 x 29" tire.

This however explains why recently nobody has these tires for sale at the moment; Teravail must have pulled them from the lineup for awhile to repair this defect. Hope they get this issue fixed.

Do you know what's going on with these tyres? I hope they bring them back because I can't seem to find them anywhere?

I purchased a brand new pair of Sparwoods for my Cutthroat.  The previous Thunderburts were set up tubeless, so I thought I would do the same with my new Sparwoods.  At about 30-40psi, the tire exploded off the rim, covering me, the walls, floor, and ceiling with sealant.  Thinking it was a fluke, I tried it again.  Same result.  Covered in sealant, ears ringing.  At this point I'm gunshy.  So, last night I decided to just throw a tube in them so I could at least get my bike back into commission.  At 40psi, the tire launches off of the rim and the tube explodes.  Big bruise on my leg.  I've changed countless tires, and I've had different types of flats, but I've never had it where the tire actually explodes right off the rim.  And after 3 times, both with and without tube, I have to say I'm pretty leery of trying again.  If I can even get the tire to stay on, I don't know that I want to bounce around gravel roads and take corners on pavement.  There has to be some kind of manufacturing defect.  I'm perplexed.

Hi All

Most rim's have a max tyre pressure like on my wheels I have DT Swiss XM481 rims and the max safe pressure is 31 psi.

Most MTB rims over 25mm rim's have a max seating pressure is 40 psi! this is not the riding max pressure!

I have been running Teravail Sparwood's my bike for this past Tour Aotearoa with a great ride, I run my tyres at 24psi front and 26psi rear riding a mix of Tarseal, Sand, Dirt, and Gravel.

I have only taking off my Sparwood's for winter riding/training

Almost all Tyres will come off wider rims with low to no hook rims if you run with high pressures (40+ psi)

Happy riding

Kiwi Pete
